"Understanding Prose' (ENG257) is The book traces the journey of English prose from Sir Thomas Browne's 'Religio Medici' to the writings of twentieth century. There are elaborate descriptions of different forms of prose e.g. diary writing, journal writing, travelogues, essay, review writing and the historical and scientific writings. An attempt has been made to explain the social, cultural and historical reasons for the emergence of these forms of prose.
"Understanding Prose' (ENG257) will enable students to relate the development in English literature with the development of English thought in particular, and European thought in general. They will also realise the close association between scientific thinking and prose writing. They will realise the importance of clear and lucid writing.
Extracts from representative works of prose forms are included in every unit of the book. These extracts will give the students an idea of how these prose forms were actually practised by well-known writers. The explanations will help them understand the extracts from a historical perspective.
We hope 'Understanding Prose' (ENG257) will equip the student to understand all forms of prose writing, be it an essay, newspaper article or a scientific report.
The extracts and other material for the book have been collected from various Colleges and University libraries. We acknowledge their help with gratitude. We are also grateful to all those who have directly and indirectly helped us to bring out the book in its present form.
